When conducted in an environmentally and socially safe manner, in line with the requirements of the Hong Kong Convention, ship recycling is an example of how effectively planning the lifecycle of maritime infrastructure can integrate it into the global circular economy and responsible value chains. This session will explain the key aspects of ship recycling and how it supports wider objectives at the international level that seek to decarbonize the shipping industry, reduce global warming and improve supply chains governance.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs has led a transformative journey to address the environmental and social conditions of ship recycling in Pakistan. This session will revisit the country’s early challenges, discuss the progress achieved, and explore how ongoing reforms and future plans to address some of the remaining barriers and position the national industry as a model for safe, sustainable, and globally compliant ship recycling.

This session will discuss what are the infrastructure and technological needs for ship recycling yards to become compliant with the Hong Kong Convention, the challenges faced to identify suitable funding and the financial instruments that could be adapted in support of the industry.
